The dairy industry is embracing reverse osmosis technology to produce concentrated milk and whey products in a more cost efficient manner. By creating a denser milk or whey product for transportation and then rehydrating it at the final location, transportation costs can be cut. Whey powders and whey protein concentrates are only made available using reverse osmosis filtration.
Skim milk is another major dairy product produced using reverse osmosis methods. The fat is separated from the whole milk. The use of RO allows for less opportunity of fat damage, rancidity and fouling. Whey protein powders are much less costly to produce by removing as much water from the product prior to evaporation processing. This allows for huge energy savings which makes these products more affordable, and eco-friendly.
